Webster Hall Could Be Granted Landmark Status Today

The Landmarks Preservation Commission will vote today to landmark Webster Hall, the famed nightclub and concert venue located on East 11th Street between Third and Fourth avenues. The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation has pushed for the historic banquet hall and onetime speakeasy, which was built in 1887 and has served as a venue for artists such as Woody Guthrie, Peter Seeger, the Flaming Lips, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, to be landmarked since last summer. The commission is expected to pass the proposal.
At today’s hearing, the commission will also consider extending the NoHo Historic District, which first got protective status in 1999. The additional sections would include portions of Bond Street, Great Jones Street, and East 4th Street between Lafayette Street and Bowery.
