No Tax Hikes, No First Responders, No Party: Massachusetts Town, Citing Policing Shortage, Cancels July 4th Celebration

A Massachusetts town is canceling its July 4th celebration, citing “public safety considerations” due to a budget shortfall to fund police and first responders. But residents and social media users see a different motive, as it comes weeks after they voted against a property tax increase.The town of Rutland, about 60 miles west of Boston, announced on Wednesday that it will be canceling its “cherished” 4th of July celebration — even though it had “raised funds needed for the event” — due to concerns that not enough police officers or firefighters would be present. It also said it will not refund donations that were contributed toward the festivities. An organization that advocates for fiscal responsibility, the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, said in a post on X that the decision is “inexcusable” and called for officials who made the decision to resign, accusing them of trying to get “political payback” for rejecting the tax increase. Earlier this month, Rutland residents rejected a request to increase their property taxes to help the town cover a $3.1 million deficit. If passed, residents would have seen their average annual tax rate increase by $979 for one-year. They were also given two different choices for multi-year increases totaling up to $1,661. Town officials said if the proposition failed, they would have to cut four full-time and three part-time police officers, and the 4th of July celebration on the 250th birthday of America’s founding might be affected.In a statement, the Rutland 4th of July Committee said, “Due to anticipated staffing limitations, our Police and Fire Chiefs have determined that they cannot safely support both the event and routine emergency services at the same time. Moving forward under these conditions would put both attendees and the broader community at risk,” it said.The committee added that it “explored the possibility” of bringing in outside personnel to help address the staffing shortages, but decided against it due to concerns about the lack of a “unified command structure.”“This decision is based solely on public safety considerations. It is not related to funding availability or intended as a response to any community viewpoints,” it said. Further upsetting residents was the committee’s statement that it will not be refunding donations. “The Town has determined that donations should not be refunded. Some of the funds have already been used for event-related expenses, including printing, deposits, and fundraising costs, and all donations are held in a municipal gift account for the sole purpose of supporting Rutland’s 4th of July celebrations,” the committee said. “Because funds are pooled and expended collectively, it is not feasible to determine or return individual contributions. Instead, all remaining funds will be preserved to support future 4th of July celebrations.”The Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance said that the state’s attorney general should investigate Rutland “since people and businesses who privately raised donations won’t get their money back.”Another Massachusetts town, Framingham, also announced that it canceled its annual pre-Independence Day celebration, which usually includes fireworks and music, citing “significant budget constraints.”A Framingham spokesman told CBS Boston, “Due to limited staffing resources and ongoing financial challenges, including budget cuts and school and municipal layoffs, the city has made the difficult decision to cancel the annual Stars & Stripes event scheduled for June 2026.”In a post on X, one user said, “They already secured all the money needed. They are just mad the residents didn’t want to fund their woke nonsense.”“The people should take to the streets for their own celebrations. These cities and towns are doing this for partisan reasons,” another person wrote. A conservative commentator, Jon Nicosia, wrote, “These Mass. cities and towns had plenty of money for illegal alien support, but not for the 250th 4th of July.”Rutland defended its decision, as its official Facebook account responded to a comment critical of the decision to cancel its celebration, saying, “The Town was very transparent in sharing that the 4th of July festivities would be impacted if the override vote were to fail.”“Now that the override has not passed. The 4th activities are the first noticeable cut as we continue to prepare for decreased services beginning July 1st,” the town said.
