Harvey Miller, a decorated World War II airman dubbed “The Jinx of the 15th Air Force” after being shot down six times, died Sunday in Belleville, Mo.
As a combat photographer and door gunner on B-24 Liberators, Miller was downed on two of his first four bombing missions, landing safely after the first incident in a plane peppered with 75 bullet holes.
Crews refused to fly with him, at times seeing his name tag and saying, “Just so you’re not Jinx Miller.” Miller went on to fly 27 missions.
Wounded twice, Miller earned a dozen medals that included the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Purple Hearts.
