Lloyd Brown, the last known surviving World War I Navy veteran, died Thursday at a nursing home in Maryland. He was 105.

His death came only days after the death of the last known surviving American female World War I veteran, Charlotte Winters, who was 109 and also in the Navy.

An Arkansas farm boy, Brown lied about his age to join the Navy at 16, and became a gunner on the battleship USS New Hampshire. A cellist, he was assigned to an admiral’s 10-piece chamber orchestra aboard the USS Seattle. He later became a Washington, D.C., fireman.
