Max Faulkner, winner of the 1951 British Open and a member of the British Ryder Cup team that won the title in 1957, has died at 88, the European PGA Tour announced on Monday.
By capturing the Open at Royal Portrush, Faulkner broke the winning streak of South Africa’s Bobby Locke at golf’s oldest major. Locke regained the title in 1952, his third in four years.
After Faulkner’s Open victory, no other Briton won the claret jug until Tony Jacklin 18 years later.
Faulkner played in five Ryder Cups but won only one point in a foursome in 1949.
