‘New Hampshire Factor’
In regard to Seth Gitell’s column regarding the “New Hampshire Factor” [Op-ed, September 26, 2006], he failed to list three Republican presidential candidates who were residents of New York City and in fact lived in Manhattan when they were nominated.
The first one was Wendell Willkie, the 1940 Republican presidential nominee who moved to New York City in 1929 to become the CEO of Commonwealth and Company, a major public utility company, and lived in Manhattan until his death in 1944.
The second one was President Eisenhower who moved to New York City in 1947 to become head of Columbia University and lived there until he was nominated and elected president in 1952.
The third person was President Nixon who, upon his defeat in the 1962 California governor race, moved to Manhattan to join a major law firm and lived in Manhattan until he was nominated and elected president in 1968. It is also fair to mention that Governor Rockefeller was vice president between 1974 and 1976.
