‘Walton Ford’s First Museum Show Gives His Work the Wall Space It Deserves’
While delighted to note your coverage of Walton Ford’s exhibition opening at the Brooklyn Museum, I must respectfully take issue with the reviewer’s statement that this event constitutes the artist’s “first museum exhibition” [Arts & Letters, “Walton Ford’s First Museum Show Gives His Work the Wall Space It Deserves,” November 2, 2006]. “Brutal Beauty: Paintings by Walton Ford” was organized by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in 2000. This exhibition, accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, included more than 20 paintings whose beauty and originality were set off by being seen in proximity with Audubon’s “The Birds of America.”

‘New Contract Gives a Win To Teachers’
As a citizen of this city, a town much less troubled than it used to be, I am delighted that Mayor Bloomberg hammered out, with a friendly hammer, an agreement with the United Federation of Teachers [New York, “New Contract Gives a Win To Teachers ,” November 8, 2006].
As a member of that union of professionals, I obviously have, in a way, a “special interest.” It’s a special interest that I share with every other member. That special interest is the youngsters whom we serve and the parents who put their trust in us.
Now let’s roll up our collective sleeves, educators and everyone else alike, and beef up our forces to create safer schools, lower class size, and build on this refreshing new optimism for the good of the community of all cultures.
