‘Sell the Projects’
I couldn’t agree more with your sentiments on allowing people to own their units in housing projects [Editorial, “Sell the Projects,” October 25, 2007].
I first proposed giving the projects to the tenants in June of 2002, when I ran for the 65th Assembly District on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The tenants were all for it.
Curiously though, most other people opposed it. The conservatives did not want a giveaway that would not foster a proper appreciation of the property, and the liberals could not fathom that the tenants were responsible enough to make monthly payments.
In the end, I believe that some sort of tenant takeover is the only humane way to make the necessary upgrades to the quality and volume of our housing stock.
