‘Columbia Pulls a Kelo’
Thank you for Michael White’s excellent oped on the increasing use of eminent domain for the benefit of private organizations [Oped, “Columbia Pulls a Kelo,” December 20, 2007]. I want a special jail built for redevelopment schemers called the “Quid Pro Quo Penitentiary for Unrepentant Politicians.”
The first candidates for incarceration would be Governor Spitzer, Mayor Bloomberg, and Speaker Christine Quinn for hanging a “For Sale” sign around the necks of New York neighborhoods.
Remember that word, neighborhood, because we soon won’t have any left and children will be referred to dictionaries for meaning.
Not everyone thinks an Ivy League school is either an asset or helps the public good. Many hold a contrary view of them. Besides, Columbia students are a transient lot, but the people of Harlem have roots here. They are family.
