‘Cornices Extend Buildings to the Heavens’

The article by Carter B. Horsley in the Sun’s real estate supplement on New York building cornices was amplified by Francis Morrone’s appreciation in the Arts section the same day of the splendid cornice on Lord & Taylor’s Fifth Avenue store [Real Estate, “Cornices Extend Buildings to the Heavens,” and Calendar, “A Landmark Department Store,” December 27, 2007].

The city can take pride in many such dramatic cornices, which serve to punctuate the height and mass of tall buildings. My own favorite, not mentioned in your articles, is attached to the Astor Court apartment building on the east side of Broadway between 89th and 90th Streets, completed in 1916, just two years after Lord & Taylor. Running atop the block-long facade of that elegant building, in juts out boldly nearly fifteen feet over Broadway with all the nobility of a Roman nose.
