‘A Wal-Mart “Expedition”‘
The New York City Council’s refusal to allow Wal-Mart to open up anywhere in New York City is nothing more than politics [Editorial, “A Wal-Mart ‘Expedition,'” March 24, 2008].
They view Wal-Mart as the enemy and refuse to see them for what they really are: A huge moneymaker for the city.
One argument for refusing to allow Wal-Mart to open has been that they would put “mom and pop” businesses out of business.
I ask them: How many jobs would be created by the opening of a Wal-Mart?
The number of jobs created by a Wal-Mart opening would more than offset the closure of small businesses. Another argument is that Wal-Mart doesn’t provide health insurance for their employees.
Many of the employees at the Wal-Marts I shop at are elderly people who probably don’t need health insurance. The city council is cutting off its nose in spite of its face. Since there are plenty of Wal-Marts on Long Island, I don’t have the problem that city residents have.
My biggest problem with Wal-Mart? I leave too much of my money there.
