‘Creating Central Park’
As a volunteer with the Central Park Conservancy, I was happy to read Kate Taylor’s excellent article tracing the roots of the park [New York, “Creating Central Park,” March 31, 2008].
But I was also somewhat disappointed to find that, like so many other descriptions of the Park’s design, it entirely ignored the important contributions of the third collaborator, Jacob Wrey Mould.
He was an English architect, illustrator, linguist, and musician. He is credited with the design of Belvedere Castle, Bethesda Terrace, the bandstand, and many of the bridges and ornamental designs.
He also went on, in partnership with Vaux, to create the original plans for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History.
Mould was no lightweight, yet most people have never even heard of him. Clearly, he deserves more recognition than he has received.
