‘It’s Mayor Vs. Teachers Round II’
‘Comptroller To Probe City’s Class-Size Reduction Effort’
It was with great interest that I read the lead article concerning Mayor Bloomberg’s desire to have the ability to remove teachers from the city payroll who remain in the system, but without an actual job, for 12 months [New York, “It’s Mayor Vs. Teachers, Round II,” April 29, 2008].
Apparently the number of teachers is in the 600 range, at a cost of about $81 million. On page 3 of the very same paper is an article entitled “Comptroller To Probe City’s Class-Size Reduction Effort,” with a report on the probe into the “minimal improvement and even some backsliding” in class size despite more than $150 million in state money targeted at this. It boggles my mind that these two situations are occurring simultaneously, at a cost to the taxpayer of about $231 million.
