Honorable Cathy Stewart
Independence Party of New York
Dear Ms. Stewart:
I am writing to let you know that I will not be seeking the Independence Party nomination this year in my race for borough president. I write this letter with great sadness. I believe that the Independence Party has been a crucial catalyst for reform of our electoral system. In particular, the Independence Party has been the voice of the people on such vital issues as increasing ballot access, promoting fiscal responsibility, and improving educational options for low-income children.
The party’s work on these issues carries on a proud tradition of third parties playing an important role in moving the political agenda. For example, the Socialist Party has long been credited by historians as an engine in the creation of Social Security and other crucial aspects of the New Deal program.
However, despite my admiration for these efforts and for many of the core values of the party, I cannot ignore the fact that when recently asked on “Road to City Hall” about anti-Semitic comments attributed to her, Dr. Lenora Fulani neither denied making the comments nor repudiated them. As you know, the day after Dr. Fulani’s appearance, I released a statement condemning her remarks that Jews “function as mass murderers of people of color.” The Independence Party’s failure to do the same has led me to decide not to seek the party’s line.
I do not believe that the Independence Party is itself anti-Semitic but, to the contrary, that members are good-hearted people who are passionate advocates for change. But this is not good enough. It must be made clear that there is no place in the party for anti-Semitism. Only if that occurs can the party have the role in reforming our electoral system that both you and I would like it to have.
Sincerely,
Eva Moskowitz
City Council Member
