It’s the most coveted reservation in town. So when the invite for a holiday dinner at Bergdorf Goodman’s new restaurant, BG, arrived, there was no turning it down.

The hosts were the president and chief executive of Bergdorf’s, Jim Gold, the champagne maker Oliver Krug, and the designer Vera Wang.

The guests were the chairwomen of the Frick Collection’s Young Fellows Winter Ball, which Ms.Wang is sponsoring. At the event on Thursday, March 9, many of these lovely ladies – Elisabeth Saint-Amand, Lauren Davis, Tinsley Mortimer – will be wearing her designs.

Mr. Gold stood briefly during dinner to give the only formal remarks of the night.

“Eighteen months ago, Vera Wang decided to do ready-to-wear. We saw the collection and it blew us away,” Mr. Gold said. “Now we’re celebrating her one-year anniversary with us. It has been an exceptional success. She is brings a sensibility to design that is very unique.”

Ms. Wang’s spring collection, for example, combines the colors of Henri Matisse with the gritty flair of America’s Wild West.

The restaurant was a fitting backdrop for a dinner in Ms.Wang’s honor because it too makes a strong statement that is both modern and romantic. It also offers a great view of Central Park and upper Fifth Avenue.

West Coast interior designer Kelly Wearstler, whose projects include the Argyle Hotel and Ben Stiller’s home, has taken an eclectic approach. The chandeliers are spiky and deco, an unexpected cap to a low-ceilinged room with petite and precious details, such as French Bergere chairs, hand-painted de Gournay chinoiserie wallpaper, and Old World bronze sconces.

This was the second private dinner to take place at the restaurant, which is open to the public for lunch and, soon, for dinner and cocktails until 8 p.m.

Not a reservations gal? Grab lunch at the bar, on a slab of green river bed granite. Order the lobster consomme to warm you up, the BG salad to stay healthy, and the pomegranate panna cotta just for fun.

One perk of the bar is a hook underneath to hang your purse.

The hooks were, of course, unnecessary at Mr. Gold’s dinner. Most guests carried – or let rest on their table – slim and bejeweled evening clutches.
