Amid the blur of art-world gatherings that raise money for its people and institutions, the Art Show is a notable exception. At this five-day fair at the 7th Regiment Armory, which runs through Monday, ticket proceeds benefit the Lower East Side nonprofit the Henry Street Settlement.
The event started impressively Wednesday night at a gala preview, raising more than $1.1 million. Nothing too chi-chi going on here, reflecting the seriousness of the Art Dealers Association of America, the show’s organizer, and the collectors it attracts. “Your hat is upstaging the artwork,” guest Courtney Hudson said to artist Damion Dreher, who had a bird perched up there.
“The beauty of it is this is a very familial event,” the chairman of the Art Show Committee, Roland Augustine, co-director of the Luhring Augustine Gallery, said in front of his booth near the Park Avenue entrance.
The president of the association, Richard Solomon, chose to position his Pace Prints booth on the opposite side of the armory.
“It’s near the food,” Mr. Solomon said, which on Wednesday included carving stations and shrimp.
The fair’s chief patrons gathered at the entrance to welcome guests. That’s where I snapped the chairman of Henry Street Settlement, Robert Harrison, and event co-chairmen Steven and Heather Mnuchin. (Mr. Mnuchin’s father, Robert Mnuchin, of L&M Arts, is treasurer of the Art Dealers Association.)
