There was a lot to take in at the Guggenheim International Gala on Thursday, which brought the art, couture, and power-broker parade to an autumnal wonderland in the middle of Central Park. But in the end, the $4 million figure raised made the deepest impression (the figures of the chairwoman of the museum, Jennifer Blei Stockman, and its New York director, Lisa Dennison, tied for second).
At the end of last year’s gala, which was held on the plaza of the Seagram Building, people wondered what the museum could possibly do next to keep on its game. Central Park — and a clear-plastic tent that didn’t hide its natural mystery and beauty — was the right answer.
Yet we do hope this gala hasn’t grown too big to return to the museum itself, once all the restorations are complete. In the meantime, the museum is the site of some chic parties. The winner of the Hugo Boss Prize will be celebrated tomorrow and on Friday there’s an opening for the exhibit “Spanish Painting From El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History.”
