Women take their cues from the ribbons, wreaths, and lights of the city’s streets and shop windows when dressing to go out during the holiday season. The most popular color is red, seen in traditional and fiery forms, in silk and taffeta, and usually worn with black. Head-to-toe winter white looks modern, especially against all the fur and gloves. A standout look is the black gown with elaborate crystal adornment, recalling snowstorms, tree ornaments, or the most coveted of gifts, from the windows of Tiffany or Cartier.
As seen in these photographs taken during the past few weeks, the holiday season is well under way, and more is to come. Charity events with explicit holiday themes include the UNICEF Snowflake Ball tomorrow; the Madison Square Girls and Boys Club Christmas Tree Ball on Friday, December 8; the New York Botanical Garden’s Winter Wonderland Ball, also on Friday, December 8, and the Brooklyn Kindergarten Society’s Yuletide Ball on December 9.
