School of Gown Dressing

Among the many lessons that supporters of the School of American Ballet learn from their involvement is how to keep fit. At the school’s Winter Ball Monday night, chairwomen Somers Farkas, Joanne de Guardiola, Coco Kopelman, a columnist for The New York Sun, Liz Peek, and Cindy Sites showed off their posture, sculpted arms, and flat stomachs in sleek designer gowns, glowing with fitness knowledge. They also helped raise more than $500,000 for the school.

“You have to be in a bold mood,” young patron chairwoman Jill Kargmansaid of the blue dress worn by her mother, Mrs. Kopelman, one of only three made by the house of Chanel. Many female guests were in bold moods, particularly those who wore dresses with trains. Ironically, these trains made dancing — a highlight of the evening, led by the ballet students — difficult. They also caused tension for husbands who couldn’t help stepping on them.

But the trains had some worthy effects. “SAB told me they couldn’t afford to clean the floor here, so I decided to provide some sweeping services,” Alexandra Lebenthal, who had a train a few feet long, said.
