Poll Finds Democratic Primary Voters Want Harris To Be the 2028 Nominee, Newsom Comes in a Distant Second

Despite losing the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris is still the Democratic primary voters’ preferred candidate, according to a new poll. A Rasmussen Reports poll released on Friday found that if the 2028 Democratic presidential primary were held today, 34 percent of voters would support Ms. Harris. California Governor Gavin Newsom comes in a distant second place with 12 percent support, down from 20 percent in January. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez comes in third place with 11 percent support. Several Democratic governors seen as potential 2028 candidates, such as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, failed to crack double digits. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker came in last place with just 2 percent. In a potentially good sign for Ms. Harris, 65 percent of black voters said they were likely to vote in the primary, while just 43 percent of white and Hispanic voters said the same. Ms. Harris receives the support of 61 percent of black voters and 58 percent of Hispanic voters.She also receives the highest level of support among self-identified liberal primary voters, with 31 percent saying they would support her and 15 percent saying they would support Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.When broken down by income, 46 percent of voters who make less than $50,000 a year said they would support Ms. Harris, while Ms. Ocasio-Cortez received her highest level of support from voters who make more than $200,000. Rasmussen Reports surveyed 1,045 likely voters, and the poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points. The poll was released a day after the Democratic National Committee released its long-awaited autopsy of the 2024 election, finding that Ms. Harris “wrote off rural America” and did not use enough “negative firepower” against President Trump. “There was a decision in the 2024 Democratic leadership not to engage in negative advertising at the scale required,” the report said. “The Trump campaign and supportive Super PACs went full throttle against Vice President Harris, but there was not sufficient or similar negative firepower directed at Trump by Democrats.”It also said that the Trump campaign’s ad about Ms. Harris’s support of taxpayer dollars going to gender-affirming surgeries for inmates was “very effective,” and that there was “nothing” that would have worked in response unless she changed her position, which she declined to do.In April, Ms. Harris said that she is “thinking” about running in 2028.“I am thinking about it in the context of … who and where and how can the best job be done for the American people. I’ll keep you posted,” she said.
