Pop Lyrics Really Have Grown Darker Over Six Decades, Study Finds

For every generation as it grows older, the new music just doesn’t seem as good as the old. Now researchers have put numbers to the pattern, showing that the lyrics in popular music have shifted away from themes of care, loyalty, and purity and increasingly toward harm, cheating, and rebellion. A study published in “Scientific Reports” analyzed hundreds of thousands of English-language songs across two datasets, one spanning the period 1960 to 2010 and another tracking Billboard chart hits from 1973 through 2023. Using an artificial intelligence language tool trained to detect moral themes, the team scored each song across 10 dimensions drawn from Moral Foundations Theory, a framework that pairs each value with a “virtue” and a “vice”: care versus harm, fairness versus cheating, loyalty versus betrayal, authority versus subversion, and purity versus degradation.The pattern was consistent. Vices climbed sharply, while virtues declined. In the larger dataset, degradation rose roughly 52 percent, harm climbed about 49 percent, and cheating increased nearly 48 percent. The Billboard data set showed even steeper jumps for some categories, with cheating up about 71 percent. Meanwhile, care, which captures empathy and concern for others, fell about 24 percent in the larger dataset and 30 percent in the Billboard set.The study’s abstract summarizes the takeaway directly: “Our findings reveal an increase in moral vices (e.g., Harm, Cheating, Subversion), and a decline in expressions of moral virtues (e.g., Care, Purity), alongside a rise in negative sentiment, anger, and disgust.”Genre shaped much of the moral language. Models predicting harm and degradation performed best when trained on metal lyrics, while purity and authority emerged most clearly in religious music. Care was easiest to detect in R&B and soul/funk. Lyrical topics tracked closely too: “Love and emotions” songs aligned with care and loyalty, while “violence and darkness” songs aligned with harm and degradation.Gender differences ran throughout, though the researchers urge caution. Because the analysis used a binary classification and female artists were underrepresented, the patterns are suggestive rather than settled. Within those limits, lyrics by female artists more often scored higher on care and loyalty, while male and mixed-gender artists scored higher on harm and subversion, especially after the 1980s.The authors stress that the study is descriptive, not a final verdict. The findings center on Western, English-language music; the larger dataset thins after 2010, and the design is correlational. Still, a pattern this consistent across nearly 400,000 songs is hard to dismiss as noise.
