|A knife attack in the city of Solingen by a Syrian extremist has helped push immigration back to the top of Germany’s political agenda.

The right-wing Alternative for Germany was on track to become the strongest party in a state election for the first time Sunday in the country’s east, and at least a very close second to mainstream conservatives in a second vote, projections showed.
