Scandal-Plagued Congressman Cory Mills Loses GOP Primary Amid Ethics Probe

Congressman Cory Mills, a lawmaker who seemingly cannot avoid scandal, will no longer be a member of the House of Representatives come January. Mr. Mills lost renomination in his Republican primary on Tuesday night to a more straight-and-narrow GOP candidate. Mr. Mills has been the subject of criticism from fellow lawmakers for years, especially women in the House Republican conference. When two lawmakers — Congressman Tony Gonzales and Eric Swalwell — were facing threats of expulsion earlier this year, some women wanted to see Mr. Mills booted from the House as well. The Office of Congressional Ethics first opened an investigation into Mr. Mills in 2024. That probe found that his private defense consulting company, Pacem, had improperly received government contracts. As a member of the House, Mr. Mills was not eligible under the chamber’s rules to be a recipient of such contracts. The House Ethics Committee opened its own investigation shortly thereafter. In May, the investigative subcommittee announced that its investigation into Mr. Mills had expanded beyond just the government contracting issue. The panel said that “thousands” of records had been compiled as part of the ongoing investigation. “These allegations are serious and complex and the [investigative subcommittee] is devoting significant resources to the investigation. The ISC has authorized more than 20 subpoenas, collected thousands of documents, and contacted dozens of witnesses,” the committee’s top Republican and Democrat, Congressman Michael Guest and Mark DeSaulnier, said in a joint statement. “The ISC expects to receive additional relevant documents and testimony in the coming weeks and will take all necessary steps to conduct a full and thorough investigation,” they added. In 2025, Mr. Mills was the subject of a domestic violence investigation after his mistress, Sarah Raviani, called the police to report that he had hurt her. Though police found evidence that Ms. Raviani had been physically abused, she later recanted her allegations and declined to press charges. Mr. Mills has consistently denied any accusation of wrongdoing. Another woman, Lindsey Langston, also had a tryst with Mr. Mills while he was married to his wife and made other allegations of abuse. Ms. Langston, a former Miss USA, filed a lawsuit against Mr. Mills in late 2025 after he allegedly threatened to release nude photos of her publicly. Ms. Langston broke off her relationship with Mr. Mills after news reports began circulating that he had hit another woman — Ms. Raviani. In October of 2025, a judge granted Ms. Langston’s request for a restraining order against Mr. Mills, citing his persistence in sending messages to her social media accounts even though she had already blocked him.
