Second Deadline for Guthrie ‘Ransom’ Passes With No Payment, No Suspects, and No Answers

A second deadline set by the self-styled abductors of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie for a ransom payment worth millions of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrency came and went without incident on Monday evening, while the FBI provided a sobering update on the probe into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, which has continued to befuddle state and federal investigators. “The FBI is not aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers, nor have we identified a suspect or persons of interest in this case at this time,” an FBI public affairs officer, Connor Hagan, said in a statement Monday evening. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which has been leading the investigation, released a similar statement on Monday, saying that investigators “have not identified any suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles” connected to Nancy Guthrie.State authorities said they believe Nancy Guthrie was removed from her Tucson home against her will shortly before her family reported her missing on February 1. She had been last seen alive the night before.Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on the evening of January 31, 2026, at her home. Via NBCAuthorities also said Ms. Guthrie’s doorbell camera had been disconnected, and her pacemaker was no longer connected to an app on her phone.Blood that was discovered on her front porch was confirmed by a DNA test to belong to Ms. Guthrie. Last week, a ransom note was received by TMZ and a few local TV news stations demanding a “substantial amount” of Bitcoin to be sent to a specific Bitcoin address that TMZ confirmed was real. The letter reportedly contained two deadlines – one for last Thursday and one for Monday. The 5 p.m. deadline that was set for Monday was believed to be “far more consequential,” according to TMZ founder Harvey Levin, than the first deadline for payment last Thursday, which the Guthrie family also did not meet.As the second deadline was nearing on Monday, Savannah Guthrie posted a new, solo a video on her Instagram account, begging the public for help finding her mother. Her family, Ms. Guthrie said, was “at an hour of desperation” having entered into “another week of this nightmare.”All three Guthrie siblings made an impassioned plea for their mother’s return on Instagram. Instagram “We believe our mom is still out there,” Ms. Guthrie said in the video, which she filmed solo and not alongside her two siblings, as she had in previous appeals. Ms. Guthrie added: “Law enforcement is working tirelessly, around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. Rebecca Noble/Getty ImagesAs the investigation into Ms. Guthrie’s possible abduction stretched into its second week, many questions remained on the validity of the supposed kidnappers, whether they provided the Guthrie family proof of life, and whether they communicated what would happen to Ms. Guthrie if the family paid the ransom before either of the two deadlines.But the ransom notes contained details that “talked about an Apple watch, and one talked about a floodlight,” the FBI special agent in charge in Phoenix, Heith Janke, said last week. This may likely make it difficult for both the family and investigators to call the supposed kidnappers’ bluff.“This is not a letter that was thrown together in a couple of minutes. She needs it to survive, and she needs it not to suffer.”
