The Yankees could get three injured starters back for tomorrow night’s series opener against Detroit.
Shortstop Derek Jeter, right fielder Gary Sheffield, and catcher Jorge Posada didn’t start yesterday’s Subway Series finale against the Mets. Jeter pinch-ran and scored in the eighth inning, the only one to play in the Yankees’ victory.
Sheffield was scratched from Saturday’s lineup with a sore hand, and Jeter and Posada were hurt during the game. Jeter was hit on the elbow by a pitch from Kris Benson, and Posada was spiked while attempting to tag Mets reliever Dae-Sung Koo at the plate.
“I think Posada is probably more of a yes than Derek is, but again, he’s going for treatment tomorrow,” Joe Torre said. “He had a little bit of puffiness in there today. If there’s any chance at all he’ll play, he’ll play. That’s him.”
The Mets hope to get Carlos Beltran (strained quadriceps) and Kaz Matsui (stiff upper back) back for tonight’s game in Atlanta.
Manager Willie Randolph said both his injured players, who left Saturday’s game, were day to day. “Carlos has been feeling that strain in his quad for about a week and a half, two weeks, playing hard on it every day,” Randolph said. “He probably tweaked it a bit so we’re just going to go day to day.”
Matsui thought he had a chance to play tonight. “I feel better than yesterday,” he said through a translator. “With the progress I made since last night, I think I’ll be ready by tomorrow.”
Sheffield said that he broke a blood vessel in his hand on May 13 when he checked a swing, which irritates fingers in the hand. He said he felt well enough to play. He’s had similar injuries, which he said occur because he swings so hard.
