MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Michael Phelps lowered his own world record in the 200-meter butterfly at the world swimming championships Wednesday night, his second world mark in as many nights.

The American finished first in 1 minute, 52.09 seconds. He beat silver medalist Wu Peng of China by about 3 seconds. Nikolay Skvortsov of Russia was third.

Mr. Phelps thrust both index fingers in the air, signaling the two world records he has set at the meet.

A night earlier, he broke Ian Thorpe’s 200 freestyle world mark, becoming the first man to go under 1:44.
