YANKEES, DIAMONDBACKS RESUME TALKS


The Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks talked again yesterday about a trade that would send Randy Johnson to New York for Javier Vazquez. Yankees president Randy Levine spoke with incoming Arizona chief executive officer Jeff Moorad. They discussed both prospects and money, but no progress was made. A proposed three-team,10-player trade came apart last week when Los Angeles reversed course and withdrew.

SORENSTAM IS AP FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR


Annika Sorenstam was recognized yesterday as the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for the second year running. Diana Taurasi, who led Connecticut to the NCAA women’s basketball title and then captured the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year award, finished second. Russian teen tennis sensation Maria Sharapova finished third.


Sorenstam won on four continents – in Australia, Sweden, and Japan and in six of the 50 United States. She won a major (the LPGA Championship), the most money, and a remarkable 10 times in just 20 starts worldwide.

ROMARIO ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT


Brazilian soccer star Romario is retiring after a career in which he led his country to the 1994 World Cup title. The 38-year-old striker burst onto the national scene in 1985 and was FIFA’s player of the year in 1994. He played for club teams in Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain, and last played for the Rio club Fluminense.

IOWA ST. DOWNS MIAMI (OH) IN INDEPENDENCE BOWL


Stevie Hicks and quarterback Bret Meyer each had more than 100 yards in a revived running game that carried Iowa State to a 17-13 victory over Miami of Ohio in the Independence Bowl last night.


Meyer’s weaving 23-yard run set up the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and Iowa State (7-5) held on to win a bowl game for just the second time and spoil Terry Hoeppner’s final game as Miami’s coach.


COLLEGE BASKETBALL


GONZAGA KNOCKS OFF OKLAHOMA STATE


J.P. Batista came off the bench for a career high 20 points, Adam Morrison scored 19, and no. 12 Gonzaga beat Oklahoma State 78-75 in its second upset of a third-ranked team this season.


The Bulldogs led by as many as 16 points early in the second half, but needed a strong finish to hold off the Cowboys. Oklahoma State (9-1) pushed its way back into the game with a 21-8 run that John Lucas III capped with a 3-pointer to make it 65-62 with nine minutes to go. After a 9-2 run by Gonzaga (10-1),the Cowboys drew to within a point but could not take the lead.
