DEVILS TOP RANGERS IN LAMORIELLO’S DEBUT Brian Gionta and Alexander Mogilny scored 16 seconds apart in the third period, and the Devils rallied behind general manager-turned-coach Lou Lamoriello, 3-1 over the Rangers last night.


Kevin Weekes was 5:41 away from his first shutout in nearly two years but instead lost his second straight decision in the span of three days. Steve Rucchin scored for New York, which has lost three straight, all at home in the team’s worst skid at Madison Square Garden this season. The Rangers hadn’t lost consecutive games at home since falling to Vancouver and Colorado.


ROENICK OUT 4-6 WEEKS WITH BROKEN FINGER Los Angeles Kings center Jeremy Roenick will be out four to six weeks with a broken finger, an injury he found out about a day after not being selected to the U.S. Olympic hockey team. Roenick broke the finger during Monday night’s 4-3 shootout win over Vancouver.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL


PATERNO NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, who turns 79 today, got an early birthday present yesterday when he was overwhelmingly selected as the Associated Press college football coach of the year.


After four losing seasons in the last five years, Paterno and the Nittany Lions rebounded in 2005 to go 10-1, share the Big Ten title, and earn a spot in the Bowl Championship Series. For that, Paterno received 45 of 65 votes from media members on AP’s college football poll board.Texas’s Mack Brown was second with eight votes after leading the Longhorns to a perfect regular season. Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis and USC’s Pete Carroll got three votes each.


In Paterno’s 40th season, Penn State was just seconds away from going unbeaten. Its only loss was 27-25 at Michigan, on a last-play touchdown.


BASEBALL


LOFTON INKS ONE-YEAR DEAL WITH DODGERS Six-time All-Star Kenny Lofton agreed yesterday to a $3.85 million,one-year contract with the Dodgers,filling a need in the Los Angeles outfield. The 38-year-old Lofton hit .335 in 110 games for Philadelphia last year, the NL’s highest average among players with 350 or more at-bats.


RANGERS ACQUIRE RIGHT-HANDER EATON FROM PADRES The Texas Rangers agreed yesterday to acquire right-hander Adam Eaton and setup reliever Akinori Otsuka from San Diego for pitcher Chris Young, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, and outfielder Terrmel Sledge. Eaton won 11 games in each of the last two seasons, but this year had two stints on the disabled list.The hard-throwing Otsuka was 2-8 with a 3.59 ERA and one save in 66 appearances for the Padres last season, after going 7-2 with a 1.75 ERA in 73 games as a rookie in 2004.


JONES SPURNS TWINS, JOINS CUBS Jacque Jones and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a $16 million, three-year contract yesterday, one day after the outfielder rejected the Minnesota Twins’ offer of salary arbitration.The 30-year-old Jones hit .249 last season with 23 homers and 73 RBI, the second straight year his average declined following a pair of .300 seasons. He set career highs in 2002 with 27 homers and 85 RBI.
