METS RHP HERNANDEZ GETS SHOULDER PAIN CHECKED OUT
Mets right-hander Orlando Her nandez flew to New York on Sun day to have a doctor check out pain in his pitching shoulder.
Hernandez (2–1) is scheduled to start tonight at home against the Florida Marlins. He told the Mets about his shoulder when he ar rived at RFK Stadium before yes terday’s game against the Wash ington Nationals, general manager Omar Minaya said. Hernandez threw a bullpen session Saturday.
“We’ll see what the doctor says,” Minaya said. The GM didn’t say what the team would do if Hernan dez isn’t able to start tonight.

VERPLANK WINS BYRON NELSON TOURNAMENT
Scott Verplank dropped into a squatting position and looked skyward, almost in disbelief — and to say thanks. Finally, after so many tries, Verplank won the tournament he’s always wanted to win. This victory at home was for the late Byron Nelson.
Verplank, who as a teenager growing up in Dallas got to know Nelson and play several rounds with the former star, used three straight birdies and an incredible par save from a bunker at no. 17 to win the first EDS Byron Nelson Championship played without its namesake.
