BRUINS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PRICE’S GAFFE

Glen Metropolit scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period after Montreal goalie Carey Price caused a reckless turnover and the Boston Bruins went on to beat the Canadiens 5–1 last night to avoid elimination in their first-round series.

Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots for the Bruins, who now trail the Eastern Conference quarterfinal 3–2.

RAVENS’ McNAIR RETIRES AFTER 13 SEASONS

Steve McNair intended to complete the final three years of his contract with the Baltimore Ravens. He worked hard during the offseason and arrived at minicamp ready to assume his role as the starting quarterback.

His body had other plans.

McNair announced his retirement yesterday, ending a 13-year career in which he was selected co-MVP, led the Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl and orchestrated the most successful regular season in the Ravens history. He received a standing ovation from his teammates after revealing his decision, then contained his emotions during a hastily arranged news conference.

UCLA ALL-AMERICAN LOVE PLANS TO LEAVE EARLY FOR THE NBA

UCLA’s Kevin Love is NBA-bound. Less than two weeks after leading the Bruins to the Final Four, the All-American freshman announced Thursday that he’ll skip his final three college seasons and enter the NBA draft.

“I feel like I’m in the right spot to take my game to the next level,” Love said yesterday. “Since I was 5 years old this has been a dream of mine.”

RUSH, ARTHUR HEADED TO NBA

Brandon Rush is headed to the NBA for sure this time. Darrell Arthur may be going with him. Mario Chalmers? He hasn’t made up his mind. Two of Kansas’s three biggest stars declared themselves eligible for the draft yesterday, less than two weeks after helping lead the Jayhawks to their first national title in 20 years. Rush, who lost his college eligibility by declaring for the NBA draft a second time, is shopping for an agent and likely will start working out for NBA teams in about a month.
