Ready To Ride Into September

September is expected to be a banner month for women’s fashion and beauty magazines, with advertising pages at many glossies far exceeding last year’s numbers. At Vogue, September advertising pages jumped 16.2% to 727; and at W, the 22% spike was even more marked, with advertisers purchasing 477 pages in the magazine, according to Women’s Wear Daily.
If the August issues of these magazines are any indication, those September pages will extend the trends presented in these pre-fall editions: blue party dresses, fur coats in vibrant colors, equestrian style, and plenty of post-Labor Day white. Accessories editors across the board are featuring with items that emphasize an old-school style of elegance: crocodile handbags, cloche hats, and leather opera gloves.
An expansive feature on the latest denim trends, including neon-colored and metallic jeans is in this month’s InStyle. Actress and singer Mandy Moore, in a flirty red dress by Calvin Klein, graces the cover. Also inside is a Diana, Princess of Wales fashion retrospective, and a piece celebrating 45 years of designs by Rudolf Valentino.
Actress Winona Ryder, in a teal, antique velvet ball gown by Marc Jacobs, has the cover of Vogue, whose pages include a profile of Hillary Clinton’s Prada-wearing aide, Huma Abedin, and a piece about designer Thom Browne’s new women’s wear lines.
Jewel-toned jeans, blazers, and dresses dot the pages of Elle. Actress and entrepreneur Sarah Jessica Parker appears on the cover wearing a Balenciaga nautical-style jacket, and gold accessories. Inside, an equestrian-themed fashion spread shows off accessories, including leather gloves, and bellshaped hats. The magazine also has a backto-school-theme shopping extravaganza, featuring preppy staples such as a plaid jumper, a striped turtleneck, and a wool, Aline skirt.
In Harper’s Bazaar, designer Michael Kors interviews pop star and “his muse” Jessica Simpson, who dons a beaded sapphire ball gown by Roberto Cavalli. A feature on young designers at the helm of such old and venerable fashion houses as Anne Klein, Nina Ricci, and Chloé, gives the spotlight to Isabel Toledo, Olivier Theyskens, and Paulo Melim Anderson, respectively.
Soccer star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, glare out menacingly from the cover of W magazine. Inside there’s a provocative 28-page bedroom photo spread of the couple. In addition, the issue includes a story on Giorgio Armani’s new skin care line, and fur-heavy fashion spreads.
Marie Claire’s “Fall Fashion Preview” incorporates cinched-waist skirts, metallic fabrics, and feather-adorned designs. The magazine also has an item on “subtle” plastic surgery options for women in their early 30s, and a profile of actress and this month’s cover girl, Anne Hathaway.
Allure presents its “Best Tressed” list, with “Simple Life” star Nicole Richie cleaning up in the “best side-swept bangs” category. Stories and spreads about bottle blonds, cropped cuts, and do-it-yourself, salon-quality blowouts round out the magazine’s hair coverage. Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is on the cover, and inside, the fashion bulletin highlights curved heels and black gemstones.
Lucky touts tailored dresses, open-toed wedges, and drop-waist jumpers. Its denim guide spotlights several stiff-looking, cropped jean jackets, while another feature shows readers how to adapt their favorite summer pieces — tie-neck blouses, wide-legged pants, and floral dresses — for autumn.
