BALD AND PROUD OF IT Hair care products are out there for everyone these days – even for men without hair. Bald Guyz is a grooming and scalp-care line that caters to the needs of men with little or no hair. “Bald by nature or bald by choice, we are all bald guys,” the founder and president of Bald Guyz, Howard Brauner, 48, said. Mr. Brauner, the “Head Bald Guy” (as he calls himself), began losing his hair at 18. He realized the niche market potential when he could not find a sunscreen for his head that he liked. “They were greasy, thick, and ran into my eyes,” he said. “I had a need that no one was satisfying.”
The Bald Guyz line includes a product that fills that need: a green tea extract sunscreen gel with SPF 30+ ($9.99). Also on offer are individually packaged quick drying Head Wipes designed to rid the head of natural oils secreted throughout the day ($4.99). The Moisture Gel ($5.99) is made of aloe, calendula, chamomile, and green tea extract to soothe and heal skin from razors and the elements. Bald Guyz is available at a variety of supermarkets and drugstores, including Duane Reade, Rite Aid, and Eckerd.
CHEMISTRY AT CLINIQUE Clinique has long known that biochemically men are in need of greater skin care help than women. (Men have more sebaceous glands, androgens, and coarser facial hair.) One of the latest products from Clinique Skin Care for Men is an Electric Shave Primer lotion, with chamomile and kola nut extract, that primes the beard, lifts hairs, and protects against electric razor irritation ($14.50). Also new at the Clinique counter is an SPF 15 lip balm free of flavor, shine, or color ($10) (Clinique at Macy’s Herald Square, 151 W. 34th St., 212-695-4400).
A LUSH LOOK Lush – the British brand of handmade cosmetics – offers soaps in a pinwheel of color and spectrum of scents. For guys who want to lather up, there are masculine-sounding soaps like Rock Star and Demon in the Dark. Lush has also introduced the improbable-sounding Coal Face Complexion Cleanser ($10.95) made of charcoal, licorice, and sandalwood oil; a Sea Vegetable Soap with seaweed, and layers of exfoliating sea salt ($6.35), and a travel-friendly Hybrid Shampoo and Conditioning Bar ($7.95) infused with fennel, tarragon, and pine scents (Lush, 1293 Broadway at 34th Street, 212-564-9120).
ARTFUL GROOMING The average man will shave about 20,000 times over the course of his lifetime, according to the folks at the Art of Shaving. To make that go as smoothly as possible, the Art of Shaving has long offered hand-crafted badger brushes, shaving sets, and alcohol-free shaving products, including their new Ingrown Hair Night Cream, with shea butter, willow bark, and meadowsweet extract ($40). Just launched is a tangerine essential oil body care duo: body wash with jojoba, grape seed, avocado, and Indian Neem extract ($22), and body balm ($28) with Moroccan Argan oil (The Art of Shaving, 373 Madison Ave., 212-986-2905).
