For its new brand Tailwind, Payless Shoes has teamed up with three Olympic athletes to bring a little fashion to the price-conscious consumer. The trio includes Olympic soccer goalie Hope Solo, Olympic volleyball player Logan Tom, and Brandi Chastain, who is widely remembered for scoring the game-winning penalty kick in the 1999 World Cup — and subsequent jersey removal.

Tailwind’s motto, “Move Towards Your Life,” is meant to inspire women. The goal is “to get women moving, to make them feel good about themselves,” Ms. Chastain said.

The shoes, which incorporate Nike technology, are priced between $19.99 and $34.99. Some of the shoes feature G-Zone technology, a honeycomb gel engineered in the Nike Sport Research Lab that disperses when the foot strikes the ground, aiding in impact and takeoff.

Each of the athletes said she has taken the shoes to the streets to test them out. “I was a little nervous, but they are incredibly comfortable, and they actually give really good support,” Ms. Tom said.

For those wondering how the Tailwind sneakers compare to other, more expensive types, such as a pair of $110 Nike Shox, the president of Tailwind, Clare Hamill, said advanced runners shouldn’t toss their high-end sneakers just yet. “They are definitely for a beginner runner. If you’re in the New York Road Runners, pop into your Nikes,” she said.

The shoes, which are available in six styles, including flip-flops, slides, and regular lace-up sneakers, come in bright colors such as hot pink and neon green, and are currently available at select Payless stores and Payless.com.
