Tanker Reports New Projectile Strike in Strait of Hormuz, Further Endangering Ceasefire

A tanker reported being struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, the latest move in a series of tit-for-tat strikes that have endangered the fragile ceasefire aimed at restoring ship traffic through the strategic waterway.Reuters news agency quoted Britain’s UKMTO maritime security agency saying the tanker had sustained damage to its bridge but that all crew were reported safe.It was the second attack on a ship in the strait since Thursday, when an Iranian drone caused minor damage to the upper deck and starboard bridge area of the Singapore-flagged container ship Ever Lovely.The United States retaliated Friday by striking Iranian missile and drone storage facilities and coastal radar positions after President Trump described the Ever Lovely attack as a “foolish violation” of the 60-day ceasefire established in a memorandum of understanding signed on June 18.Thursday’s Iranian attack was seen as a warning to shipping companies against passing through the strait on the southern side, hugging the shore of Oman. Tehran has demanded that ships pass only on the Iranian side of the strait, where it seeks to exercise control over all traffic.Iran did not comment specifically on Saturday’s strike, but Reuters quoted Iranian state television saying the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had fired “warning shots” toward unspecified ships using channels it had not approved. It was not immediately reported where the vessel struck Saturday was located when it was hit.Iran’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said earlier that it had launched “defensive” attacks on military targets in the region linked to the American military. Bahrain, the site of America’s regional navy headquarters, said it had been subjected to an Iranian drone attack.The renewed tension appears to be slowing traffic through the strait, with UKMTO saying it raised its assessment of the threat level on Saturday to “substantial.” The ship-tracking agency Kpler reportedly registered just 13 transits through the strait on Friday, though additional ships may have passed through with their transponders turned off.
