Tennessee Declares June as ‘Nuclear Family Month,’ Coinciding With Pride Month

Tennessee will be celebrating June as “Nuclear Family Month,” a legislative move that establishes a new state observance during the same time traditionally recognized by the federal government as LGBTQ Pride Month. The newly designated observance effectively serves as a contrast to Pride Month celebrations traditionally reserved for June, focusing instead on promoting traditional family structures.Signed into law last month by Governor Bill Lee, Joint Resolution 182 was introduced just two days after the state’s Republican-controlled legislature advanced it through the statehouse. Mr. Lee and state Republicans had aimed to push similar legislation last year, but it took an additional year for the measure to officially clear the statehouse.The resolution’s language explicitly defines the nuclear family as “one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children.” Furthermore, the text of the legislation claims that this specific family unit is “God’s design for familial structure” and “God’s perfect design for humanity.”Proponents of the resolution emphasize the state’s role in upholding traditional values and addressing societal challenges. The document highlights the critical issue of fatherless homes, noting that “fatherless families are four times more likely to live in poverty than married couple families.” In addition, the resolution warns that fatherless children are 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances and face a higher likelihood of developing mental health issues. The legislation explicitly states that “the nuclear family is under attack in our beloved state and nation, and it is our responsibility to uplift, protect, and support values that help Tennessee prosper.”The state’s decision has drawn significant pushback from critics and LGBTQ advocacy organizations, who argue the resolution was designed to diminish the LGBTQ community during a month dedicated to their visibility.GLAAD released a statement strongly criticizing the legislation and the lawmakers behind it.“Resolutions like this do more to reveal the cluelessness of elected officials whose own families and those of their constituents have various family dynamics and structures,” GLAAD wrote. “The strongest families are grounded by love. Lawmakers trying to exclude and intentionally harm some families should be recognized as actively harming all by not focusing their time working for an inclusive Tennessee where all are welcome and can succeed.”
