The Russian Promise for ‘Anti-Woke’ Migrants —You Get What You Deserve

Eighteen months after President Vladimir Putin opened Russia’s doors to Westerners fleeing “neoliberal ideology,” the reality for many new arrivals has been far harsher than promised, marked by dismissive bureaucrats, financial loss, and even recruitment into the Russian army to fast-track citizenship.More than 2,000 people have moved to Russia since Mr. Putin set up his nation as a refuge for those fleeing a “destructive neoliberal ideological agenda” in their home countries, offering reduced bureaucracy and humanitarian support. As the first cohort of migrants settles into a second year under the policy, their experiences offer an early test of whether that promise holds.In August 2024, Mr. Putin signed a decree on “the provision of humanitarian support to individuals who share traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.” The executive order offers a simplified visa application process and a temporary residence permit to prospective immigrants from the United States, much of Europe, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Ukraine and Taiwan.As of mid-November, interior ministry figures showed that 2,275 people had taken advantage of the “Shared Values Visa,” also known as an “anti-woke visa.”The decree marks a departure from prior immigration policy, which generally required applicants for temporary residence to demonstrate proficiency in Russian and a familiarity with the country’s history and laws. The law does, however, stipulate that applicants must sign a written statement declaring that they reject the “destructive neoliberal ideology.”Russia, which labels itself as the last Christian bastion, has welcomed this wave of foreigners, some of whom have started visible Youtube channels that chronicle their new lives in Russia. For many viewers, these videos amplify the Kremlin’s narrative of moral refuge while downplaying the practical difficulties of resettlement.Previous migrationsWhile the decree has spurred new interest, foreign immigration to Russia dates back to shortly after the 1917 October Revolution and the formation of the Soviet state, says Professor Lewis Siegelbaum at Michigan State University.These immigrants included people with technical knowledge in industrial and agricultural trades. Often, the new arrivals identified with the collectivist ideology of the Soviet Union and some were escaping the Great Depression in the United States. However, when Stalinist-era purges swept millions of Russians — including thousands of foreigners — into labor camps, or gulags, many left the country.Today’s trend of foreigners moving to Russia remains small, Mr. Siegelbaum told The New York Sun, but he said the motivations have shifted. “They’re not Russian in origin,” he said. “But I think whiteness seems to be a motivating factor. That is, they seem to identify with a kind of white nationalism that is being projected by the Putin regime.”Mr. Siegelbaum said social issues play a role. “I think also to some extent the sexual politics — the intolerance that the Putin regime has shown toward overt expressions or public displays of gay and lesbian orientation” — is a motivating factor. Unlike earlier waves of American migration driven by economic necessity or technical expertise, Dr. Siegelbaum said, today’s movement is more vulnerable to disappointment because it is rooted in identity rather than opportunity.Russian immigration lawyer Timur Beslangurov told the Sun that Western societies are moving away from what he considers acceptable moral values and looking at Russia as an example. “The trend that the West is going toward is not the right direction in terms of moral values, in my opinion — and in the view of many in Russia,” he said. “Many Westerners who come to Russia see that Russia supports families and traditional values.” However, the road to a comfortable livelihood in Russia is not always an easy one, and not every family is successful. In practice, the gap between ideological expectation and everyday life has proven wide.The trialsThe Hare family, which started a Youtube channel, has had one of the most public unravelings. The family of five, including three teenaged sons, moved from their Abilene home in Texas and received temporary asylum in Russia in August 2024.Shortly after the family arrived, its housing plans collapsed, forcing them to spend a harsh winter working on a rural farm outside Moscow in exchange for room and board. Their financial situation worsened when, they say, they were swindled out of $50,000 in a failed investment and were unable to recover the money through law enforcement.In a series of documents chronicling the Hare family’s complaints, and reviewed by the Sun, officials initially refused to open a criminal case. However, in a recent video published by the family, Leo and Chantelle Hare discuss their latest updates on the “ongoing scandal,” announcing that the prosecutors office in the Moscow region has initiated an additional review into the alleged fraud. The episode highlights the limited legal recourse available to foreign newcomers, whose residency status often depends on continued goodwill from the state.Despite the rocky start, the Hare family insists that they moved to Russia so that they could “begin building a future for our children in a country where Christianity as a belief system is still upheld.” The family also claims that they “still support the President’s policy” and are “grateful continually for his magnanimous actions.”Their continued expressions of loyalty, even amid prolonged hardship, underscore the uneven power dynamic faced by foreign migrants whose ideological alignment does not necessarily translate into material stability.Derek Huffman and his wife DeAnna also moved from Texas to Russia with their three young daughters in 2025. The family quickly started a YouTube channel chronicling their move to the so-called “American Village,” an initiative started by expat Tim Kirby. Designed specifically for English speakers, new arrivals can purchase land outside of Moscow. Two months later, the family announced that Derek had signed a contract with the military in order to fast-track Russian citizenship. The couple believed that Derek’s previous welding experience would allow him to serve in a support role but he was sent to the front lines. While the family continues to share updates on YouTube, with Derek still making appearances when he is home on leave, the Russian language remains a barrier. In one video, his wife DeAnna openly shared that she had relapsed into drinking after three years of sobriety, expressing that she was feeling “an enormous amount of stress.” Adding that even if her husband goes to the “lions den” the Lord will “protect him.” A contrary voiceDan Castle, 36, and a U.S Marine veteran, runs the YouTube channel Wild Siberia and tells the Sun in a phone interview that he does not favor ideological immigration. Mr. Castle explains that people who move abroad expecting ideological alignment may discover that it does not last. “A lot of people are moving somewhere because they think that the people are thinking like they are,” he said. “Ideas, ideology, can change.”Mr. Castle added that those who uproot their lives for ideological reasons are often driven by extremes. “There’s very few people who actually pack up and go,” he said. “If you look at their stories, they’re usually religious lunatics or political lunatics, because these are both ideological things.”After surviving deployment in Afghanistan, Mr. Castle, originally from Los Angeles, traveled around Europe before visiting Russia in 2022. He decided in October to officially stay and raise his family in a Siberian region, near Lake Baikal. Mr. Castle said he started his YouTube channel so his family, particularly his mother, could follow his day-to-day life in Russia. While the community of Americans living in Russia is relatively small, some online channels, including Wild Siberia, have drawn large audiences, with nearly 100,000 subscribers.Unlike other American YouTubers who promote life in Russia as better than in the United States, Mr. Castle said his content is meant to push back against that narrative. “I’m actively trying to correct what these other pages are doing,” he said. “I’m not going to sell an idea to someone.”Instead, Castle said, his channel reflects the realities of living far from Russia’s major cities. “I’ve made myself comfortable being uncomfortable,” he said. “My channel shows you how miserable and disgusting my life can be … and it’s beautiful.” Mr. Castle said he views himself as an exception among Americans who move to Russia, motivated not by politics or opportunity but by a search for isolation and hardship. “I didn’t care about politics, I didn’t care about money,” he said. “I only wanted to feel what I felt in Afghanistan — alone, miserable. As a veteran of true combat, I came here to be uncomfortable.” For Castle, Russia offers no ideological salvation — only indifference.Despite the recent interest, those considering a move to Russia should proceed with caution.“The American dream is different for everyone,” says Mr. Castle, contrasting it with what he described as a far harsher reality. “The Russian promise is a slap in the face to everybody. It’s a singular idea that you’re going to get what you deserve. ,,, You get what you work for, whether it’s good or bad.”In Russia, he said, there is no cushioning between ideology and outcome — only consequence.
