HOTEL
The Wauwinet is a beautiful seaside retreat on the island of Nantucket, Mass. It’s the only Relais & Chateaux property on the island and is also home to a great restaurant, Topper’s. Through September 1 travelers can partake of the hotel’s Irresistible Midweek Rate (available Sunday through Thursday) of $500 a night, based on double occupancy. The rate includes breakfast as well as activities, which range from use of sunfish sailboats and bicycles to daily boat excursions to Coatue peninsula for a picnic on a private beach.
For room reservations, call 800-426-8718 or visit www.wauwinet.com.
LODGES
Travelers planning a trip along U.S. Highway 12 between Missoula, Mont., and Lewiston, Idaho – which parallels much of the route taken by Lewis and Clark – will be interested to know of three new lodging facilities. The High Country Inn is located near Orofino and the greatest concentration of Lewis and Clark sites in Idaho. The property is set in a meadow surrounded by ponderosa pines and includes a lodge, four luxury cabins, and a six-person outdoor hot spring spa. The Lodge at River’s Edge, in the Clearwater River Canyon section of Orofino, includes 24 river-view rooms, 21 village-view rooms, and four suites. The River Dance Lodge in Syringa, which has six log cabins with private hot tubs, is near the banks of the middle fork of the Clearwater River.
For more information about the inns, as well as guided trips on the Lewis and Clark Trail, visit the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Web site at www.ioga.org or the Idaho state tourism site at www.visitidaho.org.
AIR TRAVEL
Iceland? That’s so 2003. If you really want to impress your friends, consider a vacation in Greenland. Air Greenland recently launched new routes with cheap seats between several towns on this very large island’s west coast. The tickets are available every Saturday in northern and southern directions between Nuuk, Maniitsoq, Sisimiut, Aasiaat, and Ilulissat (on Mondays the airline also flies the southbound route from Ilulissat via Sisimiut and Maniitsoq to Nuuk). Through August 31, a round-trip ticket from Ilulissat to Nuuk costs $660. Transatlantic flights originate in Copenhagen. Air Greenland has a modern fleet, and you need not read Greenlandic to get vacation ideas from its very good in-flight magazine, Suluk: It’s downloadable in English from the airline’s Web site, www.airgreenland.gl.
