Trump Administration Prepping Reverse Discrimination Lawsuit Against the New York Times: Report

The Trump Administration is reportedly preparing to sue the New York Times for allegedly discriminating against a white employee by denying him a promotion. The Times reported on Sunday that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is preparing a civil rights lawsuit stemming from allegations of reverse discrimination involving a white employee who did not get a promotion and claimed it was because of his race and gender.A spokeswoman for the Times, Danielle Rhoades Ha, said in a statement that the allegations are “politically motivated.”“The New York Times categorically rejects the meritless and politically motivated allegations that the Trump administration’s E.E.O.C. is pursuing against us,” Ms. Rhoades Ha said. “Our employment practices are, and have always been, lawful, merit-based, and focused on recruiting and promoting the best talent in the world.”The Times notes that the EEOC had been conducting a “wide-ranging” investigation into the paper’s “hiring and promotion practices.” However, it said it was told that the investigation’s scope had narrowed and was focused on the allegation of reverse discrimination. “Conversations were ongoing when, suddenly, on April 21, the E.E.O.C. told The Times that the case had been referred to the agency’s legal unit for review, to determine whether it would bring a civil action in court,” the Times reported. The Times noted that the EEOC might “bring the case as a broader civil rights claim, arguing that the Times’s employment practices, including diversity initiatives, amounted to unlawful discrimination against white men.”President Trump frequently criticizes the Times’ coverage of his administration. On Thursday, he wrote on Truth Social that the paper’s coverage of the war in Iran is “actually seditious.” That post came the same day the Times’ editorial board said that America’s military is “losing its edge” and that the “weaker nation is in the stronger negotiation position.”Mr. Trump insists that America has “militarily decapitated Iran.”He is also suing the Times for defamation over its coverage of him amid the 2024 presidential campaign. Last week, he lashed out at ABC News after its late-night host Jimmy Kimmel said that First Lady Melania Trump had a “glow” like an “expectant widow.” The ill-timed joke was made two days before a gunman stormed through a security checkpoint. Law enforcement officials say the suspect was trying to kill Mr. Trump and other top officials at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Mr. Kimmel says his joke was not about an assassination attempt, but rather about the age difference between the president and the first lady. Still, Mr. Trump demanded that ABC fire Mr. Kimmel. While ABC has stood by the comedian, the Federal Communications Commission ordered the network’s parent company, the Walt Disney Company, to submit applications to renew the licenses for its eight local broadcast stations.The chairman of the FCC, Brendan Carr, says it ordered the stations to start the license renewal process early in connection with an investigation into Disney’s DEI practices. Mr. Carr told reporters last week that Disney provided insufficient documents as part of the investigation and that the timing of starting the license renewal process is coincidental. However, liberal commentators viewed the move as political and an effort to punish ABC.The Trump Administration has sought to stamp out DEI in the federal government, institutions of higher education, and businesses. In December, the head of the EEOC, Andrea Lucas, shared a video on X encouraging white men to file claims with the agency if they believe they were discriminated against because of their race or gender. And in February, the agency launched an investigation into allegations that Nike discriminated against white employees. The EEOC did not respond to the Sun’s request for comment by the time of publication.
