Trump Announces Planned Military Strikes on Iran Will Be Put on Hold, Citing ‘Serious Negotiations’

President Trump says he is holding off on conducting military strikes on Iran, which were planned to commence on Tuesday, citing “serious negotiations” that are now taking place. He says Arab leaders asked him to delay the strikes. The United States and Iran have ostensibly in a cease-fire since last month, though both countries are using military assets to block ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The now-aborted plan to strike Iran on Tuesday followed weeks of attempts to find a meaningful peace agreement between the two nations. On Monday, Mr. Trump announced that he would acquiesce to Arab allies’ request for a delay in military strikes. “I have been asked by [Arab leaders] to hold off on our planned Military attack of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which was scheduled for tomorrow, in that serious negotiations are now taking place, and that, in their opinion, as Great Leaders and Allies, a Deal will be made, which will be very acceptable to the United States of America, as well as all Countries in the Middle East,” Mr. Trump announced on Truth Social. He says the request came from the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Mr. Trump claims that part of the negotiated settlement which is currently being discussed would include the guarantee that Iran would not pursue a nuclear weapon. If that agreement fails to materialize, Mr. Trump says he is still prepared to attack. “Based on my respect for the above mentioned Leaders, I have instructed Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, The Chairman of The Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Daniel Caine, and The United States Military, that we will NOT be doing the scheduled attack of Iran tomorrow, but have further instructed them to be prepared to go forward with a full, large scale assault of Iran, on a moment’s notice, in the event that an acceptable Deal is not reached,” the president wrote. According to Iranian press, the government has received “revised” points for negotiation from the United States despite Mr. Trump’s insistence last week that the sides were too far apart to make a deal. He said at the time that the cease-fire was on “life support.”On Monday, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported that a spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs confirmed that the United States had sent an updated list of potential discussion points that should be handled in upcoming negotiations. “Last week, despite the American side publicly announcing that this plan was rejected, we received through the Pakistani mediator a set of revised points and considerations reflecting their views,” the spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, said.“From the day after the American viewpoints were sent through Pakistan, we were faced with a series of proposals from the other side, which were reviewed over the past few days, and as announced yesterday, our viewpoints were in turn presented to the American side,” Mr. Baqaei told reporters. “Therefore, the process is continuing through Pakistan.”
