Trump, Declaring That Iran War Will End ‘Shortly,’ Demands American Allies Take Control of Strait of Hormuz

President Trump, in an address to the nation on Wednesday night, says the war with Iran is expected to end “shortly,” potentially by the end of April, though he cautioned that Iran must first make a deal in order to bar the future production of nuclear weapons. In the meantime, Mr. Trump says it is America’s allies — not America itself — which is responsible for reopening and securing the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to a significant increase in the cost of oil. Speaking direct-to-camera from the White House entrance hall, Mr. Trump declared that the United States has “delivered swift, decisive, overwhelming victories” against Iran’s military. He claimed that the attacks were “quick, lethal, violent and respected” by people across the world, despite nearly every ally refusing to aid in the war effort. “I did what no other president was willing to do. They made mistakes and I am correcting them,” he said of the attack on Iran. At the outset of the war, the president believed that the conflict would end within four of five weeks. Now he says that “core strategic objectives,” such as degrading the country’s military and defense industrial capabilities, “are nearing completion.”He says that despite those successes, the United States will not be actively trying to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the closure of which has led to the price of oil reaching more than one hundred dollars per barrel, and the average cost of a gallon of gas topping four dollars, as of Thursday. “The countries of the world … must take care of that passage,” Mr. Trump said, declaring that the United States has enough oil to take care of itself. “To those countries that can’t get fuel … I have a suggestion: number one, buy oil from the United States,” Mr. Trump said to allies. He also urged them to “build up some delayed courage” and “go to the strait and just take it — protect it.”After that, he claimed that the Strait will “just open up naturally.”On Wednesday, Mr. Trump again threatened to attack Iran’s energy infrastructure. He has said that Iran has up until Monday to make a deal with him or face the consequences, which would include bombing “each and every one” of Iran’s “electric-generating plants.”In a letter to the American public on Wednesday, President Pezeshkian of Iran said that his country had no ill-will toward the average citizen of the United States. He says that he wants to see a diplomatic solution prevail. “Today, the world stands at [a] crossroads,” Mr. Pezeshkian wrote in his letter, which he posted to X. “Continuing along the path of confrontation is more costly and futile than ever before. The choice between confrontation and engagement is both real and consequential; its outcome will shape the future for generations to come.”
