Trump Expresses Support for Rebranding ICE as ‘NICE’

As Democrats and left-wing activists decry Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, President Trump is promoting the idea of rebranding the agency with a new name that would make “the media” call the agency’s employees “NICE agents.”Mr. Trump shared a post by an X user that read, “I want Trump to change ICE to NICE (National Immigration and Customs Enforcement) so the media has to say NICE agents all day everyday.”The president wrote, “GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT.”The rapid response account for the White House shared a screenshot of his post. The post comes days after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed that “nobody respects” ICE or Border Patrol. Mr. Trump said that Mr. Schumer should “immediately apologize to these great patriots.”Some Democrats have also said that ICE should be abolished. And a YouGov poll released last month found 50 percent of Americans said they “strongly or somewhat” want to see the agency dismantled. Over the last year, the Trump Administration has sought to change the name of several entities. In December, the State Department renamed the U.S. Institute of Peace as the “Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.” The name change came amid a pending legal challenge over whether the institute — which has been funded by Congress — is an independent organization or a part of the executive branch. In September, Mr. Trump signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense to the “Department of War,” but the name change requires congressional approval, as its name is written in the law establishing the department. The White House did not provide a comment by the time of publication.
