Officials at the Treasury Department are preparing a design of a new $250 bill which will include President Trump’s face. Republicans in Congress have already lined up behind a new measure to put Mr. Trump’s official second term portrait on the banknote. For more than a year, Mr. Trump has been plastering his name, likeness, and design style across the nation’s capital and beyond. His allies put his name ahead of President Kennedy’s at the performance center which bears the 35th president’s name. Mr. Trump’s portrait hangs on multiple department buildings around Washington DC. His latest renovation plans include a $200 million security fund for his new ballroom, as well as an arch on the Virginia side of the Potomac. Now, some of Mr. Trump’s political appointees are preparing for a new banknote to bear both the president’s face and signature, which would mark the first time in more than a century that a living person has been featured on American currency. The Washington Post first reported the contingency plan for a new $250 bill. A bill to direct the Treasury Department to mint the new banknote was introduced last year by Congressman Joe Wilson, who welcomed the news of the preparations on Thursday and said he was looking forward to passing the legislation. He has so far garnered 15 cosponsors for the bill. According to the Post, the men leading the effort are Treasurer Brandon Beach — a former Georgia state senator who tried to help Mr. Trump overturn his 2020 election loss — and Mr. Beach’s senior advisor, Mike Brown. Messrs. Beach and Brown directed the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to start considering potential designs, should Mr. Wilson’s legislation become law. Speaking to reporters at a White House press briefing on Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the bill design is being prepared, though he said that it is up to Congress to change the law so that a living person can be featured on U.S. currency. “Right now, there is proposed legislation in front of the House, in front of the Senate, to change the first requirement so that a living person — Donald J. Trump — could be on the $250 bill,” “So, it’s all up on Capitol Hill. At Treasury, we prepare things in advance, so we have prepared in advance that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law.”The artist behind the design, Iain Alexander, told the Post that he met with Mr. Trump about the $250 banknote design. Mr. Trump, in turn, called Mr. Alexander his “favorite” British artist, according to Mr. Alexander. No living person has been featured on U.S. currency since the 19th century, when a bureaucrat appeared on a banknote in 1866, according to the Post. The head of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Patty Solimene, pushed back against the Trump appointee’s pressure to design the new $250 banknote. She was abruptly reassigned after she voiced her opposition due to legal and procedural hurdles. Messrs. Beach and Brown reportedly want the new currency to be a kind of commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. Mr. Trump’s arch is also set to be 250 feet high and he is currently designing a National Garden of American Heroes which will hold 250 statues. According to the Post, Ms. Solimene announced her reassignment to colleagues in an email. She wrote that she “never sacrificed the values or character of myself or the organization and always prioritized the U.S. Currency Program and the value each employee brings to the mission,” according to the Post. “The buck stopped here,” she added.
