Trump Removes Bondi as Attorney General, Saying She Will Return to Private Sector

Attorney General Pam Bondi will soon leave her position as head of the Justice Department, President Trump said in a Truth Social post Thursday. He says Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will take over Ms. Bondi’s position in an interim capacity once she returns to the private sector. After several reports disclosed that Mr. Trump was considering firing her in the near future, the president made it official with a warm message on Thursday celebrating Ms. Bondi’s tenure. “Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country, with Murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900,” Mr. Trump wrote Thursday. “We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.”Ms. Bondi’s tenure was marked by a failure to prosecute the president’s political enemies, including former FBI director James Comey and New York attorney general Letitia James. After Mr. Trump publicly pressure Ms. Bondi to install a loyalist as the acting U.S. attorney in the eastern district of Virginia, the indictments of both Mr. Comey and Ms. James were nullified by a judge. Ms. Bondi will also be remembered for how she and other top officials at the Justice Department mishandled the rollout of the Epstein files. After Mr. Trump begrudgingly signed a bill to mandate the release of all DOJ files related to the Epstein case, Ms. Bondi missed the required deadline to disclose the files. To this day, the author of the bill, Congressman Thomas Massie, says Ms. Bondi and Mr. Blanche have failed to comply with the law. In a post on X Thursday, Mr. Massie said he fully supports Ms. Bondi’s removal. “I hope the next AG will release all the Epstein files according to the law and follow up with investigations, prosecutions, and arrests,” Mr. Massie wrote. Despite her departure, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Congressman Robert Garcia, says Ms. Bondi will still face “accountability” for her actions during her tenure. She is likely to be a subject of investigation by Democrats on both the Oversight and Judiciary Committees if the House majority changes hands in November. “She must answer for her mishandling of the Epstein files and the special treatment she has given Ghislaine Maxwell,” Mr. Garcia said Thursday. Another member of the Oversight Committee, Congresswoman Nancy Mace, a Republican, celebrated Ms. Bondi’s removal on Thursday. “Bondi handled the Epstein Files in a terrible manner and seriously undermined President Trump,” Ms. Mace wrote. “Whether it’s spying on the search history of Members of Congress who are simply seeking answers, claiming all files have been released while key evidence remains hidden, or stonewalling every effort to hold the guilty accountable, the American people deserve an Attorney General who is transparent and delivers real accountability.”
