Trump Says There Is ‘No Time Pressure’ To End War With Iran

President Trump said there is “no timeframe” and “no time pressure” for ending the war in Iran. “People say I want to get it over because of the midterms, not true,” Mr. Trump told Fox News in an interview. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that “ultimately, the timeline would be dictated by the commander in chief and the president of the United States.”“He is satisfied with the naval blockade and he understands that Iran is in a very weak position and the cards are in President Trump’s hands right now,” she said. Mrs. Leavitt also told Fox News that Iran “must turn over the enriched uranium that’s in their possession. While it is very far into the ground, thanks to the success of Operation Midnight Hammer, it’s important to the president that they hand that enriched uranium over. He’s made that quite clear to them.”Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the U.S. directly in a statement on X, saying Tehran has “welcomed dialogue and agreement and continues to do so. Breach of commitments, blockade and threats are main obstacles to genuine negotiations. The world sees your endless hypocritical rhetoric and contradiction between claims and actions.”The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) meanwhile issued a statement on X, saying American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians, and coast guardsmen are “deployed across the Middle East as part of the strongest and most lethal military the world has ever known.”CENTCOM also said that U.S. forces had “directed 31 vessels to turn around or return to port as part of the U.S. blockade against Iran.”The Washington Post reported that clearing the Strait of Hormuz for mines laid by Iran could take up to six months, according to a Pentagon assessment. The U.S. Senate meanwhile rejected a resolution put forward by the Democrats to stop the war against Iran. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said: “The longer Trump waits to extricate the U.S. from this war, the deeper the hole gets and the harder it will be for him to get out.”Mr. Schumer vowed that Democrats will “continue to force votes on War Powers Resolutions every week until Republicans decide to put the American people over Donald Trump and end this war.”Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) said it would be “unwise” to pass the resolution. “I think it would be dangerous. It would tie the commander-in-chief’s hands at a time when he needs maximum flexibility to eliminate the threat from Iran,” he said.“We’ve been through these votes before. We’ve been through these votes recently and nothing has occurred in the makeup of this body or in the situation in Iran or the Middle East to materially change since the last time we voted on this matter,” Mr. Wicker added.
