Trump Signs Executive Order To Change Name of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’

Amid the escalating trade war with Canada, President Trump is directing the federal government to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”Earlier this week, Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social that he was giving “serious consideration” to renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America because “we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.” On Thursday, Mr. Trump signed an executive order aimed at changing the lake’s name. The text of the order states that the lake has been an “integral asset to American exploration, settlement, commerce, and defense,” and says that the deepest parts of the lake are within America’s territory. The order directs the Board on Geographic Names to “take all appropriate actions to rename as ‘Lake America’ the body of water currently named as Lake Ontario.” In a post on X, the White House’s official account shared a map of the Great Lakes, with “Lake America” written in red letters over Lake Ontario. “The Lake of America was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific.”It is unclear whether any other countries or companies will recognize Mr. Trump’s attempt to change the name of the lake as there is no international organization that determines the official names of bodies of water. Mr. Trump issued a similar directive last year when he decreed that the Gulf of Mexico be known as the “Gulf of America.” Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, threatened to sue Google if it continued to label the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America” for American users. Last weekend, Mr. Trump announced new 50 percent tariffs on cars and raw materials coming from Canada, stating that it is the “worst nation in the world to deal with” on trade matters. Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, fired back, announcing a doubling of tariffs on American steel and aluminum products, and a 50 percent tariff on furniture, clothing, and electronics. When asked why he announced the new tariffs, Mr. Trump told reporters on Thursday, “They haven’t treated us very well. The Canadian officials have treated us very badly. They’re nasty people.” He also claimed that Canada wants to be “treated like a state, but they’re not a state.”“We lose on average, over the last 15 years, $60 billion a year carrying Canada. So we just can’t do it anymore,” he said.
