Trump Warns U.S. Will ‘Do a Number’ on Iran as Reports Emerge of Talks With Netanyahu Over New Joint Strikes

President Trump said the U.S. is going to do a “number” on Iran as speculation mounts over a renewed war with Tehran. “Wait until you see what we do to Iran. We’re going to do a number. We sort of had it. You know, we’ve had it,” Mr Trump said during an election campaign in Alaska.“If you want to see trouble, let (Iran) have a nuclear weapon. That’ll be real trouble,” he added. Mr. Trump’s threats came as reports suggested he held talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the possibility of launching fresh attacks against Iran. Mr. Netanyahu told Mr. Trump in a phone call last week that Israel believed Iran was working to reconstitute its nuclear program, according to Axios which cited an Israeli official. Israel is particularly worried about Iran making Pickaxe Mountain a uranium enrichment site, the report said. The two leaders reportedly discussed a potential joint American-Israeli attack which would focus on military and nuclear targets“Bibi seems to want to go in again. He has talked to the president about it a couple times, and the president has said, ‘Well, you know, Bibi, go ahead and get ready.’ But there’s really no commitment. ‘Go ahead and get ready’ is maybe now, maybe later, maybe never,” a U.S. official told Axios. Another U.S. official told the news site that: “Bibi’s got an election before the midterms. He believes his strength is being a wartime prime minister.”As for the messages back and forth between Tehran and Washington, a U.S. official said the negotiations are “not really dead, but they’re not really alive. We’re just here, piling on the pressure and there’s a belief that smarter heads will prevail over there.”“The Iranians thought this president would back down because of the pressure and the midterms. He has shown them the error of their ways,” the official added.Mr. Trump also admitted that the U.S. and Israel might have gone “too far” when they killed the Iranian regime’s leadership in the last war. “We might have gone too far with the leaders because we don’t know who the hell we’re dealing with anymore. Nobody wants to be the president of Iran,” Mr. Trump said on Monday. Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, responded to rumors about a new attack, saying: “The situation is absolutely clear: It is they who must adapt to the realities of the region and seek solutions based on diplomacy.”“However, if they seek to repeat past mistakes and pursue military scenarios and threats, many of the consequences will extend beyond the region’s borders. It is now up to them to make a choice and determine their course of action,” he said.
