UN Security Council Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia as Riyadh Airport Comes Under Fire 20 Times

The UN Security Council has “strongly condemned” the ongoing Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia as well as its threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait. The council issued a statement highlighting “the reckless strikes” against King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh which killed 13 people and wounded over 300. The 15-member body also called for cooperation, including with the Government of Yemen, “to prevent the Houthis from acquiring arms and related materiel, technical assistance, training, financing and other assistance that could facilitate further attacks.”“All Member States must adhere to their obligations regarding the targeted arms embargo, they reiterated,” the council said, while affirming Saudi Arabia’s “inherent right to self-defence in accordance with international law.”The Saudi-led coalition spokesman, Major General Turki al-Malki, meanwhile, said the Houthis had acquired advanced technology with assistance from regional parties without specifying further. The Houthus, he said, had fired 1,104 missiles and 1,135 drones at Saudi Arabia since this round of fighting began in July, and that the Iran-backed group were storing weapons in mountainous areas of Sanaa, Saada and Amran, from where they launched attacks. The Saudi-led coalition’s forces have destroyed 127 Houthi storage facilities in recent days, including missile launchers. Mr. Al-Malki also said the Houthis had targeted the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh 20 times so far since early October. The attacks have caused major airlines to halt flights to Riyadh, including Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, KLM and Air India. Colonel Majed al-Nuzaily, a spokesman for the Yemeni armed forces, meanwhile estimated that some 700 Houthi fighters had been killed since “ Operation Dawn of Yemen” while more than 150 military vehicles and pieces of equipment had been destroyed or damaged in over 1,250 strikes in the past 24 hours. Rayed Krimly, deputy minister for public diplomacy at the Saudi foreign ministry, accused Iran of encouraging the Houthis’ attacks, saying the Kingdom had tried to meet the group in Oman “to resolve outstanding differences and bring an end to this escalation,” but that the offer was turned down. “We think the escalation by the Houthis at this later stage of the conflict is encouraged by Iran,” which continues to “arm, train and support the Houthi militia in violation of relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions and in violation of its commitments in the Beijing agreement,” Mr. Krimly said. The deputy minister added that “some of the capabilities of Iran, and of the Houthis, do come — or the intelligence — do come from at least elements in Russia or China, even commercial elements sometimes, but we do discuss these matters regularly with China and Russia, and we will continue to do so.”The Houthis meanwhile continued their attacks, targeting al-Maashiq presidential palace in the capital of Aden, killing at least five people.
