Woman Wanted in Monaco Bombing of Oligarch Found Shot to Death in Ukraine

A woman who was the subject of a global search in connection with a bombing of a Ukrainian oligarch in Monaco has been found shot to death in Ukraine, authorities there say.Ukraine’s Security Service on Tuesday said that Anastasia Berezovska arrived in Ukraine on July 1. She was wanted in connection with a June 29 bomb attack that severely injured a sanctioned businessman with links to Russia, his mistress, and the woman’s 13-year-old child. Interpol issued a Red Notice on Friday to be on the lookout for the Ukrainian national, who was facing charges of attempted murder, planting an explosive device in a public place with criminal intent, and criminal conspiracy.According to Ukrainian authorities, when Berezovska arrived in her country, she communicated with her family and two men. One of those men is a former law enforcement officer and the second is a current employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate at the Ministry of Defense.The intelligence services employee confessed to the murder of Berezovska, the agency said in a press release. Both men are now under arrest. No motive for the murder or bombing was released. The employee said he was not carrying out orders of the intelligence unit and did not inform his superiors of his actions. Ukraine’s security agency says both men made repeated transfers to Berezovska’s crypto and bank accounts. They are being investigated for potential connection with the Monaco bombing. During a search of the law enforcement officer’s home, authorities say they found a basement room that looked like a torture chamber. Berezovska’s body was later found with several gunshot wounds to the head. Ukrainian law enforcement says it has provided Monaco with information about the case and officials are trying to determine if any other people might be linked to the bombing there.Monaco authorities haven’t released information on the victims but European media have identified the individuals. The businessman, Vadym Yermolaiev, renounced his Ukrainian citizenship in 2019 and became a citizen of Cyprus. Ukraine sanctioned Mr. Yermolaiev in 2023, alleging that his company was carrying out operations in Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014. Mr. Yermolaiev has denied the accusation.A Monaco prosecutor, on Friday, said that Berezovska was dressed like a man when she allegedly planted a remote-controlled bomb at an apartment building near the French border.Berezovska is believed to have carried out reconnaissance on the neighborhood in the days before the attack. Monaco’s deputy prosecutor, Morgan Raymond, says she put a backpack containing the bomb at the front door of the building as the victims walked home from dinner. Berezovska then allegedly remotely detonated it as they returned.Mr. Raymond, told reporters that Berezovska was identified through a thorough review of CCTV footage. She escaped into France in a rented car before passing through several European countries and was last seen in Germany, Mr. Raymond said.
