Workers Report Record Job Dissatisfaction Even as Wage Dynamics Shift, Survey Finds

American workers are increasingly dissatisfied with the compensation from their jobs and their inability to advance in their careers, according to a new survey.The findings stem from a New York Federal Reserve Bank survey, which highlighted plummeting job satisfaction alongside diminishing odds that workers will successfully transition to new roles. According to the data, the share of workers satisfied with their wage compensation fell by 3.3 percentage points to 52.3 percent in March — the lowest level recorded in the survey’s 12-year history. A related gauge measuring satisfaction with promotion opportunities declined by 1.4 points. Despite this overwhelming frustration, workers are not planning to leave. The expected likelihood of moving to a new employer declined to 9.7 percent, the lowest value since March 2021. Meanwhile, the average “reservation wage” — the absolute minimum pay respondents would accept for a new position — soared to a survey high of $84,762. For most professionals, switching jobs is the fastest route to a raise, but with hiring at historically low levels, that pathway has severely narrowed.However, moving beyond employee sentiment, recent macroeconomic data points to notable shifts in wage growth. During the first year of President Trump’s second term, wages grew at 3.7 percent while prices rose by 2.4 percent. This dynamic resulted in an annualized growth in real wages — the actual purchasing power of those wages — of 1.3 percent. To put this into perspective, real wages from March 2006 through August 2025 grew by an average annual rate of just 0.6 percent, meaning the recent growth rate is nearly twice the long-term average.This recent surge in real wage gains has been particularly impactful for the private sector, where workers have seen gains of more than $1,400 in a single year, decisively outpacing inflation, according to the White House. Blue-collar workers have benefited the most, with manufacturing wages up $1,800, mining and logging wages up $1,900, and construction wages up $3,000, the White House said.These figures stand in contrast to the economic environment under the Biden administration. During the early period of President Biden’s term — specifically from January 2021 through the summer of 2022 — real wages fell as the Consumer Price Index increased more rapidly than the growth rate of wages, one study found.While real wages slowly increased for the remainder of Mr. Biden’s term, the purchasing power of those wages never fully returned to the levels seen in January 2021.Yet, despite recent gains in purchasing power, the broader economic divide remains stark. The gap between the rich and the poor in America is the widest it has been in at least a generation, NBC News reported. According to Federal Reserve figures, the amount of wealth held by the top 1 percent increased at more than double the rate of the bottom 90 percent in the first nine months of last year. At the very top, Elon Musk’s fortune is approaching that of 19th-century magnate John D. Rockefeller when measured as a share of the overall U.S. economy. Slowing long-term wage gains have heavily contributed to this widening disparity; a 2025 report from the Economic Policy Institute found that since 1979, wages for the bottom 90 percent of earners have increased 44 percent, while wages for the top 1 percent have skyrocketed by more than 180 percent.
