Alleged Links to Terrorist Entity Cast New Shadow Over Iran’s World Cup Participation

Just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Iran’s participation is shrouded in uncertainty again after its soccer officials were reportedly denied entry into Canada for this week’s FIFA Congress at Vancouver.More than 200 member federations are assembled there to review final preparations for the expanded 48-team World Cup, scheduled for June 11 to July 19 across Canada, the United States and Mexico.According to multiple reports, Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s football federation and two other officials were deported because of suspected ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which Canada officially classifies as a terrorist entity. The Iranians were removed from Canada after arriving at Toronto Pearson International Airport despite reportedly having received visas earlier in the week.Canada’s immigration office declined to comment on individual cases, citing privacy laws, but reiterated its broader policy. “The government has been clear and consistent: IRGC officials are inadmissible to Canada and have no place in our country,” a spokesperson for Immigration Minister Lena Diab said in a statement.Vancouver is one of 16 host cities for the expanded tournament and is scheduled to host seven matches, making security planning a high priority.The deportation of Iran’s top soccer officials injects fresh uncertainty into the country’s World Cup participation, which had already become a subject of international debate after conflict escalated in the Middle East.Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week Iran will be permitted to compete in America but warned that other members of Iran’s delegation could still face restrictions if found to have links to the IRGC.Iran is scheduled to play two group-stage matches at Los Angeles and a third at Seattle. Iranian officials lobbied FIFA to relocate its matches to Mexico after President Trump suggested it might not be appropriate for them to play in the United States “for their own life and safety.”But the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, has remained insistent that the schedule must proceed as planned. The repeated assurances have done little to silence concerns.In a separate embarrassment, Vancouver police denied a request to provide a motorcade escort for Mr. Infantino, saying such privileges are reserved for heads of state and internationally protected people.“As the FIFA executive does not meet Internationally Protected Person standards that would warrant such an escort, the request was declined,” the Vancouver Police Department said.The rebuff was a small but symbolic reminder that FIFA’s immense commercial power does not necessarily translate to diplomatic status, particularly as security scrutiny intensifies around this summer’s tournament.Mr. Infantino is dealing with mounting pressure on multiple fronts. Criticism has intensified over soaring World Cup ticket prices, with some hospitality packages reportedly reaching staggering sums that have fueled accusations the event is increasingly inaccessible to ordinary supporters.That perception has only been heightened by transportation costs and disruption attached to major venues.In the New York-New Jersey region, commuters attending matches at MetLife Stadium are expected to pay premium prices for access, including steep transit and parking fees.In response, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced this week that free World Cup fan festivals will be held across all five boroughs.“These events were not initially set to be free, but the world’s game should belong to the world,” Mr. Mamdani said.He framed the move as a corrective to concerns that the World Cup is becoming financially exclusive.“When I think back on my first World Cup, some of my most meaningful memories weren’t in the stadium,” he said. “They were in the fan zones, surrounded by thousands of people brought together by a pure love of the game.”Human rights groups are also pressing FIFA for greater clarity on immigration protections, civil liberties and visitor safety amid concerns over immigration enforcement policies in the United States.
